Web page design and website build tutorial
1. What is a domain name?

What is a domain name? A domain name is a web address that ends in .com, .org, .net, or another similiar ending. Getting a domain is inexpensive and easy. When I wanted to registered netsky.biz , I made sure that no one else had it, and just started paying my small yearly fee for it. Now whenever someone types www.netsky. biz in their web browser, our web site would show.

What's a URL? - URL is a geek term that stands for Uniform Resource Locator. It just means (web) address. Our Website URL is http://www.netsky.biz/.

2. Register your domain name

For computers to communicate with one another, they have to be directed to the correct "location" on the web, which is specified by a number like 223.184.102.16. These numbers would be too hard to remember, especially when you browse many different sites every day. That is where name resolution service comes in. Functioning like a directory, name resolution service resolves a domain name to the IP address. So you no longer have to remember all these easily confusing numbers. When a visitors types in your domain name, a DNS server resolves it to the unique IP address that the web hosting company assigns you. A DNS server functions like a 411 phone operator, looking up the correct IP address and sending the visitors to your website.
Domain registration is a completely automated process. Once you choose the name you want and register it, you are not charged for it on a monthly basis. The fees for domain registration usually range from A$12.50 to A$69.55 per year. Netsky.biz does not offer domain registration. However, you can register your domain name at a registrar, it is still possible to host your website with Netsky. You will just need to point your domain at our DNS servers, which is a very easy process. If you register your domain name with us, it is automatically pointed and you do not need to make any changes.

3. Get to know some terms concerning domain name

If you are new to web hosting, all the terms and abbreviations can get a little confusing. Perl, CGI, Webmail, PHP, ASP and many other terms can make choosing difficult. Educate yourself on all the many different acronyms that you will need to now. Here is a short list of some of them
Linux - an operating system, like Windows, but preferred by many web hosters as more stable and secure. Buckwebhost.com utilizes both Linux as its system of choice
ASP - Active Server Pages, a Microsoft programming language that is inherent to Windows
PHP - an open source programming language that is inherent to Linux
HTML - Hypertext markup language, this is the language that web pages are written in
Perl - a complex programming language that can be used to greatly enhance the functionality of your web site.
CGI - Common gate interface, application can be written in Perl, C/C++
Bandwidth - amount of data transferred between your website and people that view it
Storage - amount of hard drive space allocated to your website
SSL - secure socket layer, used to encrypt data traveling between the web server and the person viewing the website. A certificate must be installed on the website in order for the data to be encrypted.
This is just a short primer. Many more terms will come up as you progress with building your website.

4. Domain Name Security

Unless you have complete trust in someone, you should insure that you are the only person listed as having control of your domain and not permit anyone to be the "technical contact" on your behalf.

Information about the registrant of any domain name is publicly accessible. A domain name should be registered in your personal name. Unless required, there should not be a company name associated with the domain. (It is significantly easier to impersonate a member of a company than an individual.) The address should be a valid address where you can receive mail; it does not need to be your home address. The phone number should be a valid phone number where you can be reached or a message can be left for you. The email address should be an address where you can be contacted.

As soon as your domain is registered, it is recommend that you create a dedicated email address specificly to list in the domain registry database (whois). It is not recommended that you use your primary email address because, due to the public nature of the database, it will begin receiving unsolicited email (spam). We recommend creating an email alias or email forward (a fake email account that points to your real email account) that can be changed occasionally. This can usually be done in your web hosting control panel once your site is online.

Using false information in a domain registration is sufficient reason to have your domain registration removed from your control. For people with a desire for more anonymous domain registration, an identity proxy service may be used that specializes in forwarding legitimate mail/email/phone communications while keeping the registrant's identity hidden from public view.

5. Domain Control Panel and Domain Nameservers (DNS)

What is Domain Control Panel and Domain Nameservers (DNS)?

Your domain registrar will provide you with a domain control panel so that you may set your domain nameservers (DNS) setting. When you sign up for web hosting, the web host will provide you with their DNS information. It usually looks something like ns1.domainname.com and ns2.domainname.com. This is the connection that points your domain to your web hosting company. If you ever change hosting providers, you will change this to point to the new provider.

DNS changes don't work instantly. Each Internet Service Provider (ISP) on the planet must make a copy of the master database before each of that ISP's users can use the domain name to visit the site. Most major ISPs update their database daily, but a few only update every few days. The DNS change will work for most internet users the next day.
